It’s always a great feeling to wrap up the semester with a heartfelt thank you to parents, students and staff who made our counseling activities worthwhile and successful.  The counselors had a wonderful time discussing setting the pathway toward College and Career exploration with “College:  Making it Happen” Night!  We’ve also had enormous success in meeting with students about setting goals for the semester.
To continue on with the spirit of academic achievement, we’d like to share a few tidbits of information for the end of the semester:
·        First semester grades are coming out on Friday, December 15.  These are the grades that will be counted towards credit on their transcript.  Remember that students will be given credit for passing grades of D grade or Higher.  Total credits needed for promotion:  21 credits

SO many great things happening this quarter in the counseling center.  We are meeting with our students creating Academic Improvement Plans, conducting presentations about educational essentials and college and career exploration.  Please take note that our semester grades are coming out on December 15, 2017.  These semester grades are very important for middle school promotion requirements.  Students must pass all courses with a “D” or higher, have 21 credits in order to be eligible for the promotion certificate.

We’re eagerly awaiting our annual Compact For Success Fieldtrip that will take place on October 21, 2017.  This event is for 7th graders and their guardians.  It will be a fun afternoon filled with exciting information that will help you and your child along the path to a university.  Permission slips are due by October 6th, 2017 in the counseling center.

7TH GRADE INFORMATION for summer school
Students who receive an “F” in core classes (for semester 1 and 2 of 7th grade) should fill out an application for summer school (in the counseling center) to recover that credit.  Parents must fill out application and return to the counseling center immediately for placement for summer school.  Please ask Math teachers for summer school applications for the accelerated math classes offered in the summer (based on recommendations from math teachers).

March and April Happenings
With Spring in the air, it is wonderful to see the counseling center transition to the upcoming school year with registration and parent nights in full swing.  We are constantly amazed with the exciting classes this school has to offer.

We had a huge turn-out for our first parent night (for our upcoming 7th graders) that took place on March 2nd, 2017.  Thank you to the 150 people who came in attendance to join us for our festivities.  A huge thank-you  to our teachers and staff who made the night successful!

Important Dates
 Wednesday, APRIL 19th, 2017

Don’t worry!  If you missed that event, we have one last parent night happening this Month.  It will take place on April 19th, 2017, 6-7 pm, in the cafeteria, if you’re are interested in your child attending HTM next year.  You will be able listen to our school orchestra play as well as learn about special programs our school has to offer.
Friday, APRIL 14th, 2017:  Progress Report

Please be advised that students will receive their progress reports on Friday, April 14, 2017.  This is a great opportunity to encourage your child to do their best before the semester grades come out.  Please be advised of the middle school requirements for promotion.

Welcoming 2017 and Celebrating Counselor Appreciation Week

January and February Currents


The Hilltop Middle Counseling Center is welcoming the New Year with good energy and lots of activities.  We are doing our feeder school visits, tackling pre-registration, attending our important district Counselor meetings and helping our students navigate (academically and personally/socially) through second semester.
REGISTRATION INFORMATION:
High School Counselors are currently registering the incoming 9th grade students for the upcoming school year.  Additionally, we are also registering our incoming 8th graders on February 23.  Parents, please ask for paperwork needed for registration.
PROGRESS REPORT:
Please be aware that our next progress report is Thursday, Feb. 16.
Check out the valuable academic interventions available to our students:
Academic Enrichment Center (AEC):  AEC is an afterschool program designed to give students an opportunity to complete missing and/or incomplete missing assignments.  Students are assigned AEC through their teachers.  Students may also attend for homework help from college tutors.
Target tutoring:  Target tutoring is an intervention for Special Ed (RSP) and English Learners (EL) who may need targeted tutoring.
RSP Tutoring:  ROOM 806 (Mon.-Thurs.) 3:10-4:10 PM
EL Tutoring:  Room 802 (Mon.-Thurs.) 7:30-8:00 AM
English Academy:  Room 209 (Saturday) 8-12:00 PM

Credit Recovery:  Credit recovery is for students who failed a class/classes needed for 8th grade promotion.  Students need to complete a total of 60 hours including 40 hours of seat time and 20 hours of independent study work.  Please note that after two hours absences, students are dropped from credit recovery.  A passing grade is a “D” or higher to earn credit.  Dates and times vary for subjects.  Please consult calendars/contracts obtained by students or go to the main office for a complete schedule.
